Withdean ward is geographically one of the largest wards in Brighton & Hove.

The ward is bounded in an anticlockwise direction beginning at the City boundary on the Saddlescombe Road by Dyke Road Avenue, Dyke Road, Millers Road, South Road, Preston Drove, Balfour Road, Ditchling Road, Surrenden Road, Peacock Lane, London Road, The Deneway, Eldred Avenue and following the railway line to the city boundary.

Withdean ward is an area of mainly private residences in the north of the City.  Preston Road and London Road run through its centre and it is served by Preston Park railway station.  It contains Westdene residential area with Green Ridge open space on its northern side.

It contains Withdean Stadium, which  is home to several athletics clubs as well as being the current home of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club.  Brighton Rugby Club is located at Waterhall sports and recreation ground to the north of the A27.

Withdean is also notable for the number of schools and colleges which it contains.  These include Varndean School, Varndean College, Dorothy Stringer school, Balfour school, Westdene school and Downs View Link College.
