Conservative and Labour politicians on Brighton & Hove City Council have taken the initiative to try to ensure that Brighton & Hove Albion’s AMEX Community Stadium is used as a host stadium for matches in the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
The AMEX Stadium is on a shortlist of 17 possible locations and, if successful, would be used for group matches in the World Cup, with several teams likely to use Brighton & Hove as their base.
Group Leaders Cllr. Geoffrey Theobald and Cllr. Gill Mitchell have submitted a joint Notice of Motion to the next Full Council meeting pledging the Council’s full support in the bidding process and beyond. They hope that all members of the Council will support their motion
Conservative Group Leader, Cllr. Theobald, said: “We want to give the organisers of the Rugby World Cup the clear and unequivocal message that Brighton & Hove City Council sits foursquare behind this bid to be a host city in 2015. The benefits to the city are potentially huge, not only in sporting terms but also to the wider economy. International media exposure for Brighton & Hove is a rare thing and we should try to grasp the opportunity with both hands.”
Labour & Co-operative Group Leader, Cllr. Mitchell went on to say: “This is an extraordinary opportunity and we must do all we can to ensure that we are chosen as a host city. Our stunning AMEX Stadium has the capacity already in place, and not only will this raise the profile of our city, it will be a welcome economic boost to local traders”
