At last some very good news about the expansion of Education Services in Portslade.
The previous Tory administration left Portslade school children in limbo with no guarantees of where they would be able to go to school. The Green administration took over the problem and ignored it, not recognising the seriousness of the situation.
However, Councillor Les Hamilton and I did understand the situation and continually lobbied the council for some urgent action. Despite the ineptitude of the Green party who missed the opportunity of buying the factory next door to St Peters School the purchase of the Ottima building on Wellington Road has now been agreed.
This will enable St Peters to expand and become an all through Primary School and with the expansions at Portslade Infants and St Nicolas Junior it means that all Portslade schools will become through primaries by September 2013.
The site will be developed (subject to planning permission) to add three new classrooms, a special educational needs centre, a school hall and a new kitchen and dining room. The new building is designed as an extension to the existing school building and demolition of the current kitchen and dining room will add much needed playground space. It will also lead to tastier and fresher school meals as the present kitchen only has facilities to reheat food delivered to the school. The new kitchen will of course be fully equipped for cooking on site.
As a governor of two of the primary schools involved I would like to thank the officers for arriving at this solution and particular thanks to Head Teachers and Governors, at the schools involved, for helping to solve the problem for the benefit of the children of Portslade.
All that is needed now is to make sure no corners are cut in providing each school with the very best facilities possible. Your Portslade Labour Councillors will continue to keep a close eye on progress and work for the best education possible for your children.
Alan Robins is Labour Co-Op councillor for South Portslade ward, along with Les Hamilton.
