Labour & Co-op say Happy Birthday to Amnesty!
International Human Rights Campaign Group Amnesty International is 50 years old tomorrow and Labour & Co-op Councillors are wishing them a happy birthday.
City Labour & Co-op Councillors will also join the recently made Freewoman of Brighton & Hove, Aung San Suu Kyi, in wishing Amnesty a happy 50th birthday.
“I wish, on this 50th anniversary of Amnesty International, that its work will continue to be so successful, that there will no longer be any need for such an organisation.”
The movement has over 3 million members worldwide, thousands of political prisoners have been released, 95 countries have abolished the death penalty, Amnesty was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and campaigned successfully for the International Criminal Court.
Brighton & Hove Labour & Co-operative Leader Councillor Gill Mitchell, said:
“Happy Birthday Amnesty!
“Over 50 years, Amnesty really has changed the world, helping thousands of political prisoners, like Brighton & Hove Freewoman, Aung San Suu Kyi. But there are still human rights challenges to face and the need for individuals to stand together against injustice remains as strong as ever.”
