Local Schools Will See Budgets Slashed, Say Labour
The average secondary school will see its budget for building work, repairs and computers slashed by £86,000 next year, new figures have revealed.
The House of Commons Library research says for primary schools in England the figure is £26,000.
These new figures undermine the Conservative-led Government claims to have found ‘more resources’ for our schools.
These revelations also follow the Tory-led Government’s decision to scrap EMA, not abandon School Sports Partnerships after this school year and increase tuition fees.
Brighton & Hove Labour Lead on Schools, Councillor Pat Hawkes, said:
“With an average reduction in capital investment of 28% across Government, why have schools been targeted for an 80% cut? It seems that we are looking at a return to the bad old days of the 1980s when children tried to learn in crumbling classrooms with equipment not up to the job.”
“The Tories have consistently targeted children and young people with cut after cut, made too far, too fast. EMA has gone, the Schools Sports Partnerships are due to go, Connexions is being chipped away at and tuition fees have shot-up.
“Why don’t these Tories pick on someone their own size for a change? No wonder the local Tory Council have made cuts to anti-bullying programmes! Meanwhile, bankers are still receiving their big bonuses. This is just not fair.”
