Labour Leader Joins International Women’s Day call for Equality

Brighton & Hove Labour Leader Cllr Gill Mitchell has joined in Amnesty’s call, on International Women’s Day, to lobby Egyptian authorities to ensure women play an equal role in a future Egyptian democracy.

The dramatic events in Egypt and across the Middle East and North Africa have seen millions taking to the streets to demand real change. Women and men have stood together, demanding an end to repression and calling for root and branch reform.

However, women are now sadly being excluded by the current Egyptian caretaker government, and the international community is worryingly turning a blind eye. For the promise of a real human rights revolution to be fulfilled, Labour believes women of diverse backgrounds and views must be at the table as full partners.

That’s why today, Labour Leader Cllr Mitchell signed a letter from Amnesty to the current Egyptian Authorities outlining the need for gender equality in a modern Egypt.

Brighton & Hove Labour Leader, Councillor Gill Mitchell, said:

“Like many people around the world, I was inspired by what happened recently in Egypt and the new possibilities they face.

“However, it is deeply disappointing that so far, women have been excluded from high level political negotiations to reshape Egypt’s future. Women must be properly included in all the key processes directed at political and human rights reform, including full participation and representation on high level committees.

“Egypt has a real opportunity to begin afresh on the basis of equality and non-discrimination for all its citizens. But that opportunity will not last long if women continue to be excluded. That’s why today, on International Women’s Day, I have joined in Amnesty’s campaign to include women in the process of political and human rights reform.”
