Penny Gilbey

Penny Gilbey has lived in Mile Oak with her husband Peter for over 40 years. Her son, daughter and grandchildren all attended local primary schools and Portslade Community College. She worked for 13 years at PCC as a laboratory technician before becoming a Senior Technician at Brighton University.

Having recently retired Penny follows in the footsteps of her family active political by representing North Portslade on the council. Penny joined the Labour party as a teenager and is Chair of the local party. She has been a member of UNISON for many years, serving on both local and national committees, representing members and negotiating for fair treatment and a safer working environment.

Penny is very active in the local community. She is a governor at Mile Oak Primary School, heavily involved with the North Portslade Community Newspaper with responsibility for the front page articles and was the main organiser of the Portslade Festival for 10 years. Currently, she is active in the Community Forum and the Local Action Team.

Penny said, “I see my role as a councillor to raise awareness of Portslade and to promote a strong and inclusive community with a sense of Pride in Portslade.”
